Radiated Tortoise (Asterochelys radiata)

Coming from the island of Madagascar this species is often referred to as the most beautiful tortoise in the world.
Radiated Tortoises are classified as a CITES Appendix 1 species but as ours are captive bred, we were able to acquire them with EEC Exemption Certificates. The classification of this exceptionally beautiful tortoise reflects their endangered status in the wild.

The species originates from the island of Madagacar in the Indian Ocean. However, field and climate data suggests the Radiated inhabits a generally arid habitiat which is also subject to occasional low temperatures. This is a large high domed species of tortoise and an overall length of 16 inches (400mm) has been recorded. Their name originates from their beautiful pattern of lines radiating from the centre of each scute. The colour of these lines appears to vary from cream to gold on a black background which enhances the contrast and overall appearance.

Our own group have proved relatively easy to maintain and are growing at a steady rate. They are kept in a large indoor vivarium which is decorated to reflect their natural habitiat. Although a basking light is available, we have found ours reject this in favour of a heat mat. Although the use of heat mats is sometimes frowned upon in Chelonia husbandry, trial and error with this species proved to suit them best. On warm days they are permitted freedom outdoors in a predator proof enclosure and here they have been observed to enjoy taking natural graze.

They are fed a mixed diet of mainly weeds (dandelion, clover, thistle, plantain, some grasses, flowers etc) which is supplemented with Romaine lettuce and seasonal vegetables supplemented with a calcium and vitamin additive. Fruit such as strawberries and melon are fed occasioanlly but taken with enthusiasm.

This image shows that as this species matures the 'star' pattern continues to radiate outwards from each scute and enhances their appearance further.
